The Owensboro RiverDawgs couldn’t overcome a five-run bottom of the second for the Miners, splitting the short series at a game apiece with the 8-6 loss.
A solo home run from Calyn Halvorson put the Miners up 1-0 in the first inning, but some small ball from the RiverDawgs led to an RBI groundout by Kyle Hogwood in the top of the second to knot things at 1-1.
Preston Cottrell seemed to be gliding through the bottom of the second, getting two quick groundouts to start the inning before Madisonville blew it open.
A single from Tyler Belcher followed by a hit by pitch put runners on first and second for Griffin Adkins, who lined one to right to drive in one and make it runners on the corners.
Adkins advanced to second on the throw to home, which allowed Brennan Hunt to drive in two runs with a line drive single to left. A single was then followed up by Halvorson who struck again with a two-RBI double to give Madisonville a 6-1 lead.
The RiverDawgs were able to cut their deficit to 6-5 with four runs across the third through fifth inning, but Halvorson continued his scorching hot day with another solo home run to swiftly stifle momentum and make it a 7-5 Miners lead.
An error cut Owensboro’s deficit to 7-6 in the top of the eighth, but Madisonville got one back in the bottom of the inning with Evan Liddie scoring on a passed ball.
The 8-6 lead was more than enough for Tyler Yotkewich who came in and closed the door for the Miners, handing the RiverDawgs the loss and moving them to 9-9 on the year.
Owensboro will make its way back to Chautauqua Park for its next game, taking on the Paducah Chiefs at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday.
