After an impressive career at Owensboro Catholic, Cort Hobelmann will continue swimming at Gettysburg College in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.

Hobelmann said he was glad the recruiting process was finally over and can relax and get prepared to make that jump to the next level.

“It’s a lot less stressful,” Hobelmann said.”Trying to choose a college was not very fun and I kept trying to postpone my decision but I finally chose and it was nice having that weight lifted off my shoulders.”

Hobelmann said the experienced coaching staff and the way the team welcomed him with open arms on his visits and meetings online made the difference in his decision.

“The two main things that stuck out was how nice and friendly the team was and the head coach,” Hobelmann said. “I had a zoom call with a couple of the guys and they all seemed very friendly and very helpful. The head coach at Gettysburg was an assistant coach for West Point’s swim team. I think this is a great opportunity for me to get even better at swimming because this coach has experienced D1 practices. This means that he will most likely be able to help me in ways that coaches who haven’t experienced a D1 practice couldn’t.”

Along with this, some family ties and a solid program for what he wants to study (either Biology or Health Science) made the decision even easier.

“I chose this school for a couple reasons. For one, this is where my Grandpa, Uncle, and my dad’s cousin went to school and so I have a lot of family who have attended this school and become successful,” Hobelmann said. “Another reason is because their Pre-med program is very good. I’m planning on going into Pre-med and so it’s pretty important for my school to have a good program. The last reason is because I got a decent amount of scholarship money to go there.”

And while Hobelmann is more than ready for the challenge collegiately, but will miss home, his friends and his teammates.

“I’m going to miss everything,” Hobelmann said. “The people on the team were always so fun to be around and they were all very encouraging and helpful. It’s going to be different because most of my friends are staying in Kentucky and all going to school together but I am going up to Pennsylvania over 10 hours away. But I’m excited for the new environment and the new people I’ll meet.”
