Former Owensboro Catholic standout John Augenstein delivered his best first-round since turning pro as he’s tied for 24th at the Charles Schwab Challenge in Fort Worth, Texas.

Augenstein carded a -1 (69) during his first 18 holes to put him in a tie with more than a dozen other golfers. Other players at -1 are Tony Finau, Collin Morikawa, Camilo Villegas, Kevin Kisner and Will Zalatoris.

Jordan Spieth and Sergio Garcia led the field after day one as each shot a -7 (63).

Augenstein started on the back nine and birdied his first two holes before back-to-back bogeys at the 14th and 15th. Augenstein rebounded with a birdie on the 1st hole before finishing with six pars, a birdie and a bogey.

The former Vanderbilt All-American hits the course at 8:49 a.m. from the No. 1 tee as he’ll play with Keith Clearwater and Michael Visacki.
