The annual City-County Track & Field Championship ended under the lights of Apollo High School Tuesday with Owensboro grabbing the boy’s title and Daviess County grabbing the girl’s title on a perfect night for local teams to compete with the state finals less than two months away.
Apollo coach Charles Shoulta said three years ago, the event had to be held at Henderson so it’s nice to have the championships back in the city.
“We didn’t have a facility in this town that could host a City-County Championship,” he said. “Just the fact that we’re about to host an amazing event tonight in Owensboro, in this beautiful facility, it was absolutely amazing. All four teams competed hard, sportsmanship all around. You see the smiles on the faces and know a good time was had.”
Daviess County coach Mark Fortney echoed the sentiment and said the great facilities at Apollo were just another advantage of the event Tuesday evening.
“It means so much more to the kids too,” he said. “They’re proud of it and it’s something to compete for, rather than what we’ve been going for the last several years. It’s a blast for myself and I know the kids love it even more.”
Owensboro coach Drew Hall said it was a solid finish for his squad.
“I was happy with the outcome of the meet,” he said. “We still have a lot of things to work and improve on. We didn’t have our best performances but we competed and came out on top.
Hall said this is just the first step on what they want to do this season.
“Every year we have 3 goals,” he said. “Win city-county, win regionals and win state. We were successful in our first goal and I feel like we have confidence going into regionals. It’s not going to be easy. We have some good teams in our region so we better come with our A game.”
Apollo and Daviess County battled it out in the final event of the night, the 4×400-meter girl’s relay.
DC won the event but it provided two of the top times in Class 3A this season.
“That last race there, that was the No. 4 and No. 5 times in the state in the girls,” he said. “They knew what was at stake … That’s the best 4×400 time I’ve had and I’ve been a coach for 25 years.”
Shoulta said they know people look forward to the final relay.
“The 4×400 is the best event in track,” he said. “That’s why we end with that event. You can tell the quality of the program, more often than not, by the quality of the 4×400 teams.”
The region meet is set for May 27 while the KHSAA State Championship is scheduled for June 12.
With less than two months until state, Fortney said there are a few things for teams to focus on.
“One thing is to try to avoid the injury bug,” he said. “We’re getting now where we’ve raced a whole lot, training has been really high level. Still got to go a couple more weeks, trying to get that peak and then at the end of the season, you’ve got to taper just right and hit it just right.”
