Matt Morris and Keith Jared have been named the girls’ and boys’ cross country coaches at Owensboro High School.
Morris has served as the head coach of the girls’ track program at OHS since January 2019 and will now also be at the helm of the girls’ cross country program. He brings more than 10 years of coaching experience to the position with previous stops at McLean County and Muhlenberg County.
“I enjoy running and being around the competition aspect that comes with the sport,” Morris said. “I look forward to using my role with track to grow the cross country program and vice-versa.”
Morris competed as an athlete at the former Muhlenberg North High School. While attending Murray State University, he broke into the coaching ranks as an assistant at McLean County.
Jared will take the reins of the boys’ cross country program, boasting an impressive resume from a 15-year career as the head cross country and track coach at Calloway County High School in Murray.
Jared is a five-time KHSAA Region 1 Coach of the Year and led the Lakers to a runner-up finish at the 2009 KHSAA 2A meet. For Jared, success doesn’t happen overnight, but rather with little steps to greatness.
“For me, there are no shortcuts to success,” he said. “We are going to learn to be successful in the classroom, on the roads and in the community.”
Early in his collegiate career, Jared led the Danville (IL) Area Community College to a pair of NJCAA Cross Country National Championships before transferring to Murray State University to compete in cross country and track. With the Racers, Jared set school records in the 3,000-meter and 5,000-meter events and was a three-time Ohio Valley Conference champion.
Both coaches will assume their respective roles effective immediately at Owensboro High School.
