Bowling: AHS girls, DCHS boys advance to State Championship

The Apollo girls’ bowling team advanced to the KHSAA State Bowling Championships for the third consecutive year, while the Daviess County boys’ team also advanced after winning the Region 1 Tournament for the first time in program history.

The Daviess County unified team of Briar Harper and Daniel Morris will also move on to state after winning their division of the Region 1 Tournament, held at Cardinal Lanes in Paducah.

The Daviess County boys earned the No. 2 seed after the initial eight individual qualifying games. After a first-round bye, they defeated Greenwood 3-1 and swept Graves County 3-0. Daviess County then swept No. 1 seed McCracken County 3-0 for the Region 1 championship.

The Apollo boys earned the No. 8 seed by lost to McCracken County.

The Apollo girls earned the No. 1 seed with their qualifying rounds, gaining them a first-round bye. They beat Owensboro — who beat Graves County — to advance to the championship match. Apollo lost 3-2 in a close fight with Barren County to finish as runner-up, still enough to earn them a spot in the state tournament.

The State Bowling Championships will be held Feb. 7-8 at Executive Strike & Spare in Louisville, with singles competition on day one and teams on day two.

Bowlers from Apollo and Daviess County also earned a spot in the state singles competition after finishing in the top four during Friday’s individual rounds of the Region 1 Tournament.

For the girls, Emma Workman (1st), Theresa Rickertsen (2nd) and Molly Statts (4th) all advanced for Apollo.

Daviess County’s Harper took fourth to advance in the boys’ singles.

Other teams competing in the Region 1 Tournament were Owensboro, Owensboro Catholic, Warren East, Graves County, Greenwood, South Warren, Henderson County, Warren Central, McCracken County, Barren County and Ohio County.
