I have to take issue with Mr. Kline’s Letter to the Editor. He attempted to demonstrate that the intent of Amendment 2 is to simply clarify legal technicalities that caused the Kentucky Supreme Court to overturn HB 263, prior “school choice” legislation. In essence, Amendment 2 is the only way to allow any enabling legislation to pass constitutional muster and thereby legalize indirect (tax credits) or direct (vouchers) to benefit private schools.
The real issue continues to be whether public funds should be diverted to private schools. Some would argue that no funding will be taken from public schools when in reality any money that goes to private schools is taxpayer dollars that could have provided more funding for public education. Those who support Amendment 2 should realize that the taxes we all pay are to benefit society as a whole by providing public education to all students, and not to pay for educating our individual children. This should be evident as we all pay school tax whether we have children in the school systems or not.
Please do not fall prey to misleading statements and advertisements espousing the benefits of Amendment 2. It is not about choice. It is simply a way to benefit individuals and private schools at the public’s expense. Please vote No on Amendment 2 on November 5.
