I’m writing today to ask people to Vote “NO” on Amendment 2. If you have any questions about this Amendment please watch an excellent KET’s “Kentucky Tonight” program involving Tom Shelton, chair of the Protect Our Schools Campaign; Randy Adams, a former principal in the Anderson County School district; Matt Robbins, former superintendent of Daviess County Public Schools; and Jim Waters, president of the Bluegrass Institute for Public Policy Solutions.
I thought Matt Robbins, in this previously mentioned debate, did an excellent job of outlining the basic problems with Amendment 2 — of which there are many problems to outline. I’ve listened to two debates now involving Amendment 2, and what I find most frustrating are the supporters of Amendment 2 who, over and over, suggest Amendment 2 will give more school choices to children in financially challenged households. Yet, relevant statistics, gathered from other states that have already put school vouchers into effect, don’t show this last idea to be true.
Therefore, the argument that Amendment 2 will give the “average” family more choices in choosing their child’s school is disingenuous, at its very best. And yes, Amendment 2 will help “upper-middle-class” parents in sending their children, to their choice, of private schools. Yet, instead of giving the “average” family more choices in choosing their children’s school, Amendment 2 will simply let private schools have more choices when choosing their future students. Let’s “all” just work on making our public schools much better!
