Prentice Nelson Vaught

Prentice Vaught 101, of Beech Grove, Kentucky passed away Wednesday, April 16, 2025 at the Heartford House in Owensboro. Prentice Nelson Vaught was born February 28, 1924 in McLean County, Kentucky to the late John Frank and Ura Teresa Herndon Vaught and was married to the former Mildred Ruth Nation on January 17, 1947.

Prentice leaves a legacy of deep faith, hard work, enduring kindness, and strong determination. He was an avid, lifelong farmer until his retirement in 1989. He loved to work the soil and witness the fruits of his labor. Prentice used many soil conservation practices growing corn, soybean and tobacco crops.

He lived his faith every day. Prentice was a lifelong member of Beech Grove Chapel United Methodist Church, where he taught the young adult Sunday school class for many years. He was also the Sunday School Director and the United Methodist Youth Fellowship Director. Prentice also served as a delegate to the United Methodist Church’s annual conference for many years.

Prentice enjoyed helping others, whether it be his next-door neighbor or people living in another country. He went on two missionary trips to Haiti, and one trip to Costa Rico, where he helped construct community churches. Prentice was also a long-time member of the McLean County Camp, Gideons International.

Prentice’s commitment to public service extended to his involvement in the McLean County Soil Conservation Service as a supervisor for over 47 years. He was also a Farm Bureau Director and served on the Board of Directors for both the Farmers Home Administration and the McLean County Planning and Zoning Commission.

In addition to his parents, Prentice was preceded in death by his brother, Gerald Vaught.

Left to celebrate his life and mourn his passing are his wife of 78 years, Mildred Vaught; a son, Larry Glenn Vaught (Linda) of Union, Kentucky; a daughter, Betty Wilson (Bob) of Bonita Springs, Florida; three grandsons, Chris Vaught of Batavia, Ohio, Dr. David Vaught (Elizabeth) of Brentwood, Tennessee, and Tyler Wilson (Amy) of Cincinnati; three great-grandchildren, Kathryn Vaught, Emma Vaught, and Jacob Wilson; a sister-in-law, Shelba Vaught of Owensboro; and a brother-in-law, G.W. Nation (Neal) of Owensboro.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 P.M. Friday, April 25, 2025 at Muster Funeral Homes, Calhoun Chapel. Burial will be in the Bethel Baptist Cemetery in McLean County. Friends may visit with Prentice’s family from 1:00 P.M. until 3:00 P.M. Friday at Musters in Calhoun.
