Roy “Skydiver” L. Shoemaker

GRAHAM – Roy L. Shoemaker, a.k.a. Sky Diver, age 81, was called Home by the Father on Monday, April 14, 2025 at his residence in Graham. He served God, his Country, and his community.  He was the first born to George and Catherine Shoemaker on June 23, 1943 in Hagerstown, Maryland. He is preceded in death by his brother, Roger, his father and mother, his step son Kevin Wagoner, his step grandson, Michael Wagoner and recently by his sister, Doris Henson.

He is survived by his loving wife, Darlene; one sister, Judy Mullenix; two brothers, John and Steve; two daughters, Penny Courtney, and Angela Loree (of his first wife, Norma Renfrow Gamblin) three grandchildren, Erik Courtney, Joy Goodlett and Michelle Courtney,  as well as six great grandchildren.

He was a member of Unity Missionary Baptist Church. He was a Veteran of the Armed Forces, a member of the Central City Fire Department for many years as well as the Fraternal Order of Police. He worked 22 ½ years for Peabody Coal Company and as a self-employed Mason. He enjoyed skydiving, scuba diving, deer hunting “playing in the mud” — so to speak and spray painting his alias “Sky Diver” in peculiar places.

If you never knew him, you’re gonna be fine, but if you never knew his Jesus you’re lost.

Memorial Services will be Saturday, April 26, 2025 at 11AM at Tucker Funeral Home in Central City with Rev. Jerry Eades officiating. Burial will be private. Visitation will be from 9-11AM on Saturday at the funeral home. Online condolences may be made at www.tuckerfuneralhomes.com.
