
Georgia Mae Daugherty Mitchell, 86, of Owensboro, was Promoted to Glory on Sunday, October 20, 2024 surrounded by family at Red Banks Skilled Nursing Center in Henderson. She was born March 22, 1938 in Muhlenberg County to the late John E. and Carrie Daugherty. Georgia was a member of The Salvation Army Church. Three of her eight children became ministers of the Gospel. She was recognized as a Kentucky Colonel because of the number of years she devoted in service to children through her work at The Salvation Army. Georgia was recognized by the National Grandparent’s Day Association and was named Grandparent of the Year for Kentucky in 2000.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, James F. Mitchell; a son, John W. Mitchell; brothers, Everett, Bill, Ira, and Millard; sisters, Elizabeth Rhodes and Jean Price; and sons-in-law, Mark Sales and Bo Painter.
She is survived by two sons, Bruce Mitchell (Sandy) and Dennis Mitchell; five daughters, Virginia Painter, Dean Sales, Jean Wilson (Donny), Janice Brown (Charlie), and Anna Gregg (Allen); 27 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; sister, Anna Dean Wells; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, October 23, 2024 at James H. Davis Funeral Home and Crematory. Burial will follow in Red Hill Cemetery in Utica. Visitation is from 3 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday and from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home.
