
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Ray Howard, beloved father, grandfather, and dedicated brother of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. on October 15th, 2024. Born on March 23, 1958, Ray lived a life marked by service, loyalty, and deep love for his family and community.
Ray was preceded in death by his sister Fonda Fant and his brother Adrian “A.D” Lewis. He is survived by his mother, Gloria “Moms” Lewis, his loving sisters Deborah Kelly and Denitra Kelly, of Danville, Illinois; Michelle Tyler and Teresa Hall of Owensboro, and his brothers Wayne “Bubba” Howard of Owensboro and Duwayne Kelly of Danville, Illinois. Ray was the devoted father of five children: Ray McHenry (Erin), Keyocko Joiner (Zac), Steven Nelson, Kelsi Higdon (Jeromy), and Jordan Phelps (Taylor). He was also a cherished grandfather to 9 grandchildren (all boys which he made known to everyone), who filled his life with boundless joy. His family was the core of his life, and he provided them with love, wisdom, and unwavering support.
As a proud and active member of Omega Psi Phi, Ray exemplified the fraternity’s cardinal principles of Manhood, Scholarship, Perseverance, and Uplift. His commitment to his brothers and the ideals of Omega shone through in everything he did, leaving an enduring legacy within the fraternity.
Ray’s warm spirit, dedication to his community, and devotion to his family, children, grandchildren and fraternity will be fondly remembered by all who had the honor of knowing him. His life was a testament to selflessness, perseverance, and the power of human connection.
A celebration of Ray’s life will be held at 12 p.m. on Monday, October 21st, 2024, at McFarland Funeral Home, 1001 W 5th St, Owensboro, KY. Visitation will be from 10am until 12pm, with service following.
Ray Howard will always be remembered for being the best dad, brother, “Unk” and Papaw his family could ever have. He has now crossed the “burning sands” into eternity and he will be so greatly missed.
