Spurgeon Lee Jones Jr., 69, of Owensboro, passed away on Sunday, October 13, 2024 at Owensboro Health Regional Hospital. He was born May 21, 1955 in Owensboro to the late Spurgeon Lee Jones Sr. and Hazel Lucille Crowe Jones. Spurgeon retired from Owensboro Municipal Utilities after 27 years and was a member of Harvest Baptist Temple. He officiated football, basketball and baseball for 36 years from 1978 to 2014. Spurgeon coached his four sons for 17 years through Little League baseball. He assigned referees for Owensboro-Daviess County Youth football for 31 years.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Charles “Chucky” Jones; and fiancée, Robin Hall.
He is survived by his sons, Micah Jones, Matthew Jones (Aubri), and Daniel Jones (LaDonna); granddaughter, Addison Jones; sisters, Carole Storm, Linda Emberton (Bill), Virginia “Ginny” Sparks (Carl), Debbie Burton (Rob), and Cindy Storm (Jerry); several nieces and nephews; and a dear friend, Gina Hayes.
Funeral services will be held at 6 p.m. on Friday, October 18, 2024 at James H. Davis Funeral Home and Crematory. Visitation is from 3 to 6 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home. Ennichement will be in Rosehill Cemetery.
