Donald Ray Shreve, age 80, passed away surrounded by his family on July 2, 2024. On June 12, 1944, Donald was born in Dundee, Kentucky to his loving parents, Evelyn and Raymond Shreve. Together, Evelyn and Raymond raised Donald and his six other siblings in Ohio County. With little means, Evelyn and Raymond raised a boisterous, funny, kind hearted, and fiercely loving legacy in their children. Donald, in particular, was the sweetest, most kind hearted soul to walk the Earth. Donald is preceded in death by his parents and five of his siblings (Jr., Frank, Ruth Ann, Leoda and Shirley Jean). He is survived by his sweet baby sister, Kathy Hedges (Mark).
On New Years Eve 1966, Donald made the ultimate resolution in marrying his bride, Carol Shreve. Together, Donald and Carol had three daughters. Donald and Carol were married for 35 years before Carol passed away in 2002. To most, Donald was a simple, quiet man, but to his family he was “Papaw.” He loved unconditionally and was there for his children and grandchildren no matter what. In the years following Carol’s death, you could easily find Donald driving one of his grandsons around Ohio County or sitting in the IGA eating lunch with his eldest grandson, Phillip. His favorite place, though, was a spot that could be found anywhere, a simple bench. This was where he could enjoy the peace of the breeze, the sunshine on his skin, one of many cigarettes, and a cup of coffee was never too far away.
Donald is survived by his three daughters, Tina Martin (Robbie), Jamie Shreve (Matthew) and Lisa Woods (John). Nine grandchildren, Elizabeth (Timmy), Sara (Westin), Phillip, Deric, Eric (Brooke), Blake, Chloe, Ty, and Raine. He also had 4 amazing great grandchildren that he adored Jack, Benny, Paisleigh, and Olivia. Donald’s pride in life was the legacy of his family and he told each of them frequently how proud he was of them.
There will be no service or visitation. James H. Davis Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of his arrangements.
We will miss you, Papaw, but we find comfort knowing you are sitting cross legged on a bench enjoying a peaceful breeze with a “Pyramid Red Short” cigarette, and a cup of coffee. We love you, save us a spot…
Donald’s family would like to thank Chautauqua Health and Rehabilitation and the Roosevelt House for their support and care in Donald’s final chapter in life.
