
Kay Layton Pate 74, of Calhoun, Kentucky passed away Thursday, June 13, 2024 at Riverside Care and Rehabilitation Center in Calhoun. Marilyn Kay Cook was born September 5, 1949 in Calhoun, Kentucky to the late William and Ethelyne Abney Cook, was married to Richard Brent ‘Dickie’ Layton, until his death on February 8, 1994, and was later married to Walter Leo ‘Cisco’ Pate until his death on March 4, 2021. Kay’s life was a testament to the enduring spirit of love and the joy of simple pleasures.
Kay retired from Ragu in Owensboro after years of dedicated service and was a member of Calhoun Baptist Church, where she found a community of faith and friendship.
A woman of many interests, Kay’s zest for life was evident in her love for family cookouts, which brought together her loved ones in celebration and camaraderie. In her younger years, she found joy in dancing, a passion that filled her with energy and happiness. Travel was another of Kay’s pleasures; she relished her trips out west and to the Smokey Mountains, experiences that satisfied her adventurous spirit.
Kay was a woman who appreciated the simple pleasures in life. She loved sitting on her porch, sipping her coffee, and taking in the tranquility of her surroundings. A fervent fan of the University of Kentucky basketball team, she watched games with an enthusiasm that was contagious to all who knew her.
As we bid farewell to Kay Layton Pate, we are reminded of the warmth of her smile, the kindness in her eyes, and the gentle strength of her character. She lived her life with grace and left behind a legacy of love that will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to know her. Her memory will be held in the hearts of those she touched with her generosity, her laughter, and her unwavering support.
In addition to her parents and two husbands, Kay was preceded in death by a son, Brent Layton; her brother, Fred Cook and her sister, Linda Morris.
Kay is survived by a son, Scott Layton (Marsha) of Calhoun; two step sons, James Pate (Cynthia) and Joseph Pate both of Owensboro; a step daughter, Amber Johnson (Kenny) of Owensboro; six grandchildren, Samantha Baggett (Joey Hinton), Hayden Johnson, Easton Johnson, Jase Johnson, Nathaniel Pate, and Wyatt Pate; and two great grandchildren, Lucas Baggett and Lillian Baggett, that will grow up hearing tales of their great-grandmother’s kindness and warmth.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, June 15, 2024 at Muster Funeral Homes, Calhoun Chapel. Burial will be in the Calhoun Cemetery in McLean County. Friends may visit with Kay’s family from 11:00 A.M. until 2:00 P.M. Saturday at Musters in Calhoun.
