
Evelyn Howard Hagan, 95, of Whitesville, passed away peacefully at her home, surrounded by her family, on Sunday, May 12, 2024. She was born in Cincinnati, Ohio on April 18, 1929 to the late Virgil and Dessa Wimsatt Hardesty. Evelyn worked at St. Mary of the Woods Catholic School in the lunchroom for many years. She liked flowers and gardening. She was a seamstress and loved quilting. Evelyn enjoyed playing games, canning, garage sales and taking trips. She was quick witted and loved spending time with all her family and having big family gatherings. She married James Edgar “Pete” Howard on July 11, 1950 and following his death, married James “Chunky” Hagan on June 16, 1990.
In addition to her parents, Evelyn is preceded in death by her husbands, Pete and Chunky, her “Angel Baby” James Edger Howard, Jr.; brothers, Edgar, Edward and William “Buster” Hardesty; sisters, Sr. Anna Jeanne “Isabelle” Hardesty, Theresa Wedding and Virgilia “Bootsie” Crowe and several in-laws.
Evelyn is survived by her children, Mike (Judy) Howard, Ricky “Smitch” (Mary Rose) Howard, Becki Coomes, Karen (Joe) Hardesty, Bob (Ann) Howard, Vicki (Duff) Gillim, Jerry Howard, Sandy (Tommy) Roby, Pam (Donny) Smith, Kenny Howard, Frank (Connie) Hagan, Lucy (Rudy) Felty, Richard “Doc” (Shawna) Hagan, Darrell “Duke” (Tammy) Hagan and Mark (Pam) Hagan, 37 grandchildren; 97 great-grandchildren with 2 more on the way and much to her regret, 0 great-great grandchildren. Survivors also include her sisters, Rita Wink, Norma Crowe, Rose Knott, Lillian Dreiman and in- laws, Mary “Hootie” Morris, Carolie Morris, Hoot Hagan, Emily Hagan and Eileen Basham and several nieces and nephews.
A Funeral Mass will be said on Wednesday, May 15, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary of the Woods Catholic Church in Whitesville, Kentucky, with burial following at St. Mary of the Woods Cemetery. Visitation will be on Tuesday, May 14, 2024 from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with prayers at 6:30 p.m. at Cecil Funeral Home in Whitesville.
