Mildred Yvonne “Yonnie” Wight, 92, of Owensboro, Kentucky peacefully passed away on Monday, April 29, 2024 at the Carmel Home. She was born September 5, 1931 in Louisville, Kentucky to Ballard and Fanna Coates and was raised in Bardstown, Kentucky.
Yonnie graduated from Baptist Hospital School of Nursing with an Associate degree. Her education continued with both BSN and MSN degrees from the University of Evansville.
She began her career as a staff nurse at General Electric before her employment at Mercy Hospital where she started the Goldencare program (now known as Connections). Yonnie was an EMT and CPR instructor. She worked as a nursing instructor and clinical educator at Kentucky Wesleyan College, Western Kentucky University and Owensboro Community and Technical College. She so enjoyed working with her students, often tutoring them in her free time to prepare for their licensure examination. Yonnie was also a volunteer for Hospice of Western Kentucky. She concluded her career as the Director of Nursing at the Carmel Home where she worked for approximately 10 years. Yonnie was an avid duplicate bridge player throughout her life. She was a charter member and elder of Century Christian Church where she sang in the choir.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank H. Wight Jr. M.D. and a son, Frank H. Wight III.
Those surviving to cherish her memory include her two daughters, Sheryl Schell of Dallas, Texas and Karen Wight (Adrian Clay Boyd) of Owensboro; her son, Bill Wight (Tammy) of Owensboro; her granddaughter, Leigh Schell of Louisville; her grandsons, Stephen Schell of Dallas, Texas, F. Hunter Wight IV of Naples, Florida, and Francis Colton Wight of Owensboro; and a daughter-in-law, Terri Wight of Owensboro.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. on Friday, May 3, 2024 at James H. Davis Funeral Home and Crematory. Burial will follow in Pleasant Grove Cemetery, Sorgho. Visitation will from 10 a.m. until time of the service on Friday at the funeral home.
