Margaret “Doris” Mattingly Schadler, 92, of Owensboro, died peacefully at home with her family around her on April 6, 2024. She was born in St. Joseph, Kentucky, on September 2, 1931, to the late William A. and Lillian Ballard Mattingly.

Doris was a lifelong member of St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, where she held esteemed roles as a founding member and past officer of the Alter Society. Graduating from Mount Saint Joseph Academy in 1949, she cherished her education and faith. For over three decades, Doris actively participated in the Cursillo Movement. She managed Shady Green Farms alongside her husband, Frank, serving as secretary and treasurer.

A passionate horticulturist, Doris nurtured vibrant flowers and tended a fruitful garden, providing her family with fresh produce. Renowned for her culinary prowess, she delighted in cooking for loved ones and farm workers, ensuring no one left her table hungry. In her leisure time, she loved playing cards with friends and family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and she loved to play bingo and bunco.

Doris’s devotion to her family was unwavering. She imparted her deep faith and strong work ethic to them, teaching them essential skills such as cooking, cleaning, and gardening. These invaluable lessons were passed down through generations, shaping the lives of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and ensuring that her legacy of love and resilience continued to thrive.

Doris embodied a Christian spirit of generosity, dedicating herself selflessly to the well-being and love of her family, church, and community. Her profound commitment to serving others is why she was deeply cherished and will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Frank R. Schadler Jr., and siblings, William A. Mattingly Jr. Herman Mattingly, Louis Mattingly, Joyce Blandford, and Bobby Mattingly.

Those left to cherish her memory include her sons, Frank Schadler III and his wife Judy, and Greg Schadler and his wife Debbie; four daughters, Laure Schadler, Jane Hansford and her husband Jeff, Suzann Millay and her husband Tony, and Karla High and her husband Robert; grandchildren, Crystal Jones (Jonathan), Bridget Ebelhar (Billy), Sherri McNulty (John), Nick Schadler, Aaron Leach (Emily), Dustin Hansford, Lindsey Fuellgraf (Alex), Adam Millay (Stephanie), Sarah Johnson (Lee), Rebecca (Josh) Jones, Jared Millay (Marissa), Jessica Schadler (Nathaniel), Zach Schadler (Katie), Seth Schadler (Jess), Allie Schadler (Nick), Erika High, Brandon High (Valarie), and Megan Despain (Jeremiah), 31 great-grandchildren; sister Jean Murphy; and sister-in-law, Ann Mattingly.

The family expresses heartfelt gratitude to Joyce McCarty, Doris’s “special” caregiver, as well as Feel The Love and Hospice of Western Kentucky for their compassionate support and care.

The funeral Mass for Margaret “Doris” Mattingly Schadler will be at 10:30 am Friday, April 12, 2024, at Saint Elizabeth Catholic Church. Visitation will be from 3:00 pm until 7:00 pm Thursday, April 11, 2024, at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory with prayers at 7:00 pm. Visitation at Saint Elizabeth Catholic Church on Friday will be from 9:00 am until the time of Mass. Burial will follow the Mass at Saint Alphonsus Catholic Cemetery.
