Dorothy Ann Payne, age 72, of Hardinsburg, KY passed away March 27, 2024, at U of L Hospital surrounded by her loving family. She was born June 19, 1951, daughter of the late Fred and Ruth Hardesty of Rhodelia, KY. She graduated from St. Romuald High School and married Jimmy Payne on April 4, 1970 at St. Theresa Catholic Church in Rhodelia, upon his return from military service. They were married 54 years this April. Mammaw Dee, as she was affectionately known by family and friends, was a member of St. Romuald Catholic Church and involved with communion distribution to the home bound and jail ministry. She retired from Ft. Knox military base as a civil servant working at the Criminal Investigations Department and in supervisory roles at the military detainment center.
She enjoyed reading, painting, UK basketball and visiting with friends. Dorothy was devoted to her family and “loved, loved, loved” them beyond measure with immense pride in her grandchildren. She was a selfless friend to all, especially her dearest friends of old, her morning coffee girls, and anyone she came across. She loved her Lord and lived a life based upon that, while sharing that with her sons and their families. She held a very deep affection for St. Romuald School and all of its “kiddos”. She loved reading to the younger classes, working fish fries, and attending ball games. Her grandchildren are the 4th generation attending there.
Dorothy was a faithful, selfless person and will be deeply missed by all.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother Eddie Hardesty and sister Martha Ann Hardesty.
Dorothy is survived by her loving husband Jimmy Payne.
Her two loving sons: B J (Cindy) Payne and Todd (Jennifer) Payne
4 grandchildren who adored her: Emma (Cole), Zack (Bailee), Kailey and Drake and one soon to arrive great granddaughter Baby P.
Her sister: Bonnie Manning (John) and her brother Johnny Hardesty (Sharon)
