Joyce Marie (Logsdon) Merritt

Joyce Marie (Logsdon) Merritt, 84, of Whitesville, passed into the light of heaven on Saturday, March 2, 2024. She was born on February 23, 1940 in Daviess County to the late Clyde and Clara Yates Logsdon. She was a member of St. Mary of the Woods Catholic Church. Joyce spent over 50 years working in grocery stores where she was a friend and “mother” to her countless customers and co-workers. Joyce lovingly provided for her family by working in the garden, canning and cooking endless meals for her family. She was excited to find new recipes and eager to try them out.

Joyce enjoyed watching UK basketball in support of her husband. In later years, when his eye sight was diminishing, she helped commentate the game off of the television for him. Her sister-in-law, Darlene, taught her how to crochet, which led to making countless scarfs and blankets. She enjoyed Sunday drives with her husband and children, and more recently she enjoyed day trips which sometimes led to the casino.

In addition to her parents, Joyce was preceded in death by her loving husband, of 56 years, Alva Ray Merritt and her daughter Sherry Elaine Mattingly, great grandchild Jack Chaney and sister-in-law, Sharon Logsdon

Joyce is survived by her three children, Charlotte (Scotty) Johnson, Scott (Robin) Merritt and Sandra (Kevin) Medcalf and her son-in-law, Mike Mattingly; 10 grandchildren, Amy, Katie and Kara Mattingly, Matthew, Nicholas and Ashley Johnson, Payton Merritt, Mackenzie McIntosh, Kelly Black and Tara Dickens; great-grandchildren Madison, Zoe, Amaya, Caasi, Amilla, Violet, Leo, Reid, Reagan, Emma, Grant, Riley and Cooper; a brother, James R. Logsdon; sisters-in-law, Darlene Merritt Wilson and Nina Russelburg Merritt and oodles of nieces and nephews that she loved dearly. She is also survived by her very special friends, Sandy Merritt, Majella Mills, Tina Fulkerson and cousin, Patty Bassinger.

The family requests that expression of sympathy take the form of donations to the Trinity/St. Mary’s Capital Campaign.

A Funeral Mass will be said on Saturday, March 9, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary of the Woods Catholic Church in Whitesville, KY, with burial following at St. Mary of the Woods Cemetery.
