Winfred Williams 87, of Calhoun, Kentucky passed away Thursday, January 25, 2024 at his home in Calhoun. William Winfred Williams was born March 29, 1936 in Evansville, Indiana to the late Volney and Una Victoria Southard Williams, was raised by his grandparents, Arville and Mattie Williams of Ohio County, Kentucky, and was married to the former Norma Jean Evans on December 3, 1953. His life was characterized by devotion to his family, his work, and his community.
Winfred’s journey through life was shared with his beloved wife, Norma. After their marriage, the couple moved to Calhoun in 1954, where Winfred began his career at Evans Slaughterhouse. His entrepreneurial spirit led him to become the owner and operator of McLean County Locker in Calhoun for 32 years, a business that thrived under his stewardship.
Winfred’s commitment to community service was unwavering. As a longtime caretaker of Calhoun Cemetery, he ensured that the final resting place of many was maintained with respect and dignity. His leadership skills were recognized in his service on the Board of Directors for Farmers Bank and Trust and as a past member of the Calhoun City Council. He was instrumental in managing local resources as the past chairman of the North McLean County Water Board.
His passion for civic engagement was evident through his roles as past president of both the Calhoun Jaycees and the Calhoun Lions Club. Known for his generous spirit, Winfred was a proud member of the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels. His faith played a central role in his life, demonstrated by his membership at Bellevue Baptist Church in Owensboro and his dedicated service as a deacon of Calhoun Baptist Church.
Winfred’s dedication to public safety and welfare was exemplified in his tenure as past fire chief of McLean County Central District Volunteer Fire Department and his past membership in the McLean County Rescue Squad. His love for tradition and community celebration shone through his roles as past chairman of the McLean County Fair Board and past chairman of the City of Calhoun Christmas parade. As we say goodbye to this memorable man, we celebrate a life well-lived and honor the enduring contributions he made to his beloved hometown of Calhoun.
Family was the cornerstone of Winfred’s life. His memory will be cherished and kept alive by his loving wife of 70 years, Norma Williams; a son, Lynn Williams (Karen) of Owensboro. In 1975, Winfred and Norma embraced the blessing of raising two nieces, Carol Owen (Morgan) of Martin, Tennessee, and Cathy Bozarth (Tony) of Calhoun, and a nephew, Ray Simon (Pam) of Calhoun, as their own children. His legacy further extended to nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, who brought immense joy and pride to his life.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M. Saturday, January 27, 2024 at Muster Funeral Homes, Calhoun Chapel. Burial will be in the Calhoun Cemetery in McLean County. Friends may visit with Winfred’s family from 10:00 A.M. until 1:00 P.M. Saturday at Musters in Calhoun.
