Renita H. Hines  76, of Calhoun, Kentucky, a beloved wife, mother, teacher, and community member, passed away on Friday, September 22, 2023, at Owensboro Health Regional Hospital.  Renita Howard was born on October 1, 1946 in Owensboro, Kentucky to Hurrol Thomas and Ada Mildred Collings Howard and was married to William Gray Hines December 17, 1966.  Renita lived a life dedicated to nurturing minds, fostering community, and cherishing family.

Renita was a proud graduate of Calhoun High School in 1964 and furthered her education at Kentucky Wesleyan College.  Her passion for education led her to obtain her Masters Degree from the University of Evansville, setting the stage for a remarkable career in teaching.  Renita was a beacon of knowledge and guidance, serving as a teacher for the Owensboro Board of Education for 30 years (1968-1998).  She later contributed her expertise to Western Kentucky University, overseeing student teachers and teaching interns from 1998 to 2019.

Her commitment to her community was not confined to the classroom.  Renita was a member of the former Oak Grove United Methodist Church, a member of the Captain William Rowan Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, as well as a member the Mollie Morehead Daughters of the Confederacy.  These affiliations underscored her dedication to preserving history, fostering patriotism, and promoting education.

Beyond her professional and community commitments, Renita had a flair for adventure and a love for the simple pleasures in life. She enjoyed looking for hidden gems at antique stores, a testament to her appreciation for history and art. Renita also loved traveling, with trips to Gatlinburg being some of her most cherished times.

Renita H. Hines was a woman of great strength, intelligence, and kindness. Her dedication to education, love for her community, and commitment to her family have left an indelible mark on all who knew her.  Renita was preceded in death by her father, Hurrol T. Howard.

Renita’s life was enriched by her loving family.  She is survived by her devoted husband of 56 years, Bill Hines; her daughter, Amanda L. Hines of Evansville; her mother, Mildred Howard of Hammond, Louisiana; a brother, Gary Howard (Ellora) of Hammond, Louisiana; a sister-in-law, Jane Hines of Evansville; her nephews, Bryce Howard, Tavis Howard; and her niece, Kylah Howard.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Tuesday at Muster Funeral Homes, Calhoun Chapel with the Rev. Tab Cook officiating.  Burial will be in the Oak Grove Cemetery in McLean County.  Friends may visit with Renita’s family from 11:30 A.M. until 2:00 P.M. Tuesday at Musters in Calhoun.
