Shirley Howell

Shirley Howell  77,  of Utica, Kentucky passed away peacefully at his home on July 20, 2023.  Shirley Dale Howell, born April 9, 1946 in the Beech Grove Community of McLean County, Kentucky.  Known simply as Shirley or “Rooster” to those who loved him, his life was one of dedicated service, tireless work, and boundless love for his family and friends.

Shirley was the beloved son of John and Mable Humphrey Howell, who predeceased him.  He was also predeceased by his son, Jeffery Howell.  Throughout his life, Shirley was a man of many talents.  Professionally, he was a mechanic, working at both Accuride and Whirlpool and ran a successful machine shop.  His abilities knew no bounds, and he often described himself as a “jack of all trades and a master of none.”  Yet, those who knew Shirley knew him to be a master in his own right, particularly when it came to his work.  His hands were rarely still, always working to fix, build, or improve. He was indeed, as many would agree, a handy man.

Shirley’s interests were as varied as his skills.  As a young man, he raced motorcycles, thrilling to the speed and the adventure it brought.  Shirley built a ’67 Fastback Ford Mustang and raced it, further showcasing his love for speed, competition, and the mechanical world.  His passion for building and racing didn’t stop there.  Over the years, he also built and raced many sprint cars, a testament to his adventurous spirit and relentless curiosity.

Shirley’s legacy is one of hard work, love for family, and a passion for life’s many adventures. His family and friends will remember him for his hearty laugh, his wisdom, and his handy skills. His loss will be deeply felt by all who knew him, but his memory will continue to inspire those left behind.

Shirley’s life was a testament to the power of love, the value of hard work, and the joy of pursuing one’s passions.  As we mourn his passing, we also celebrate his life, filled with love, laughter, and countless memories.  May we remember Shirley Dale Howell for the remarkable man he was, and strive to live with the same passion, dedication, and love he showed us all.  Rest in peace, Shirley. Your memory will forever be etched in our hearts.

Shirley is survived by his devoted wife of 33 years, Pauline Howell, whom he married on January 4, 1990.  He is also survived by his son, Brian Howell of Warsaw, Indiana, his cherished sister, Pat Mosley (Jim) of Florida, nine adoring grandchildren, and twelve great-grandchildren.

To honor Shirley’s wishes, there will be no public services.  Muster Funeral Homes, Calhoun Chapel is handling the arrangements for Shirley’s family.
