Jerrell Morris Underwood, Sr.

July 14, 1936 - April 11, 2022

It is with deep sadness that the family of Reverend Jerrell Morris Underwood, Sr. announces his passing.

Reverend Underwood went to be with our Lord in the early morning hours of April 11, 2022 at his home, surrounded by the love of his devoted wife, Lavesta Sue Underwood and family members. Jerrell will be lovingly remembered by his wife and their 9 children: Jerrell Underwood, Jr. (Denise), Tana Schultze (Bud), Jennifer Hopps (David), Duncan Underwood (Jody), Natasha Duncan (Alex), Kimberly Kerr (Calvin), Nicole Glenn (Jon), Austin Underwood and Kellie Underwood. 28 grandchildren, 29 great- grandchildren, 3 great- great- grandchildren.

He will be greeted in heaven by his parents GA and Willene Underwood and his children Michelle and Rodney Underwood.

On July 14, 1936, Jerrell was born in Fulton, Kentucky as the only child. He met his sweetheart Lavesta Sue Britton at the church social and married on November 24, 1955. They built a solid bond and a wonderful life together and over the past sixty-six years Jerrell selflessly served as patriarch of their growing team of 71.

Reverend Underwood attended Bethel College in 1955 and was ordained a Cumberland Presbyterian Minister in 1960. He went on to earn his master’s degree in Theology from Vanderbilt University in 1974. Reverend Underwood loved to serve the Lord and dedicated his life to service for over 50 years. Living a humble and grateful life, he and his wife opened their heart and home to over 100 foster kids over a period of four decades.

Jerrell’s great gift to the world was his discipleship and the many lives who came to know Jesus through him. He will be best remembered for his love of classical and Irish music, love of hunting and fishing and being “Granddaddy”. Time will not erase the memory of the sound of his deep baritone singing voice and full head of hair which he kept well into his eighties. His family and the community will miss his strong presence in their lives, but will rejoice knowing he is in peace and resting as the good and faithful servant he was.

“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” 2 Timothy 4:7
