The Senior Community Center of Owensboro-Daviess County is launching a new adult education initiative designed specifically for residents age 60 and older. The “Senior Class” series will offer a range of programs focused on lifelong learning and personal enrichment.
Most classes will take place from 4 to 6 p.m. on Tuesdays at the Senior Community Center, located at 1650 West Second Street. A full schedule and registration form are available at seniorcenterodc.com or directly here.
Senior Class programs are open to all SCC members. Membership is free for Owensboro and Daviess County residents age 60 and older. Interested individuals can register in person between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday through Friday, or call for more information.
The first offering in the series is “Genealogy for Beginners,” a free 2-hour class facilitated by SCC board member Lora Wimsatt. The class will be held on April 15 and repeated on April 22 and 29. All materials will be provided, and door prizes will be given at each session. Space is limited to 20 participants per class, and advance registration is required by calling 270-687-4640 or visiting the center to select a date.
SCC Executive Director David Tucker said the series is part of the center’s broader effort to meet the diverse interests of the community’s senior population. One session offered every Tuesday will be instructional line dancing sessions from 6-8 p.m. every Tuesday.
As part of the series, the SCC is partnering with the Daviess County Cooperative Extension Service. The first collaborative session, “Container Gardening,” will be held at 12:30 p.m. on May 22. Future offerings will include canning and food preservation in June, and Wits Workout brain games in September.
Additional topics planned for the series include healthy cooking for one or two, grocery shopping on a budget, real estate tips for seniors, healthy living, and legal subjects such as wills and power of attorney.
The launch of the Senior Class series coincides with extended hours at the SCC. Beginning April 7, the center will be open from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, and from 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesdays. Evening meals will begin in May on Tuesday nights.
“This additional time will allow us to offer afternoon and evening exercise and adult education classes, as well as provide an opportunity for seniors who are still working or otherwise unavailable during the day to come be part of the Senior Community Center family,” Tucker said.
Community members interested in teaching a Senior Class session are invited to contact Tucker at [email protected] or 270-687-4640. Suggested topics include arts and crafts, technology, music appreciation, life skills, and personal development.
“As our dream of a new Senior Community Center facility approaches reality, we want to be sure we are offering the kinds of programs, services, and resources today’s active, engaged seniors want and deserve,” Tucker said. “The Senior Class series is an exciting and positive step in that direction.”
