Sandbags available to public ahead of expected heavy rain; volunteers requested to help fill bags

With the National Weather Service forecasting a “historically high” amount of rainfall this week — potentially up to a foot — Daviess County Emergency Management is making sandbags available to residents and asking for volunteers to help prepare.

Sandbags will be available for pickup on April 1, at the Daviess County Operations Center (2620 KY 81) during two time windows: 9 a.m. to noon and 5 to 7:30 p.m. Each household is limited to 100 sandbags. Proof of Daviess County residency is required via a driver’s license and a mailed bill or statement with a matching address.

The sandbags will be located at the Daviess County Operations Center at 2620 KY 81. Sandbags will be available for pickup on April 1 from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. or 5-7:30 p.m. There will be a limit of 100 sandbags per address. Proof of Daviess County residency is required with a mailed bill or statement matching the driver’s license.   

Volunteers are needed to help fill sandbags from 9 a.m. to noon on Tuesday. Individuals age 15 and older are welcome to assist and are encouraged to bring gloves and a shovel if possible. Local businesses are also invited to send staff to help fill and load sandbags.

The National Weather Service on Monday issued the following Flood Watch that is in effect from Wednesday through Sunday:

...FLOOD WATCH IN EFFECT FROM WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON THROUGH SUNDAY
MORNING...

* WHAT...Flash flooding and flooding caused by excessive rainfall is
  expected. Preliminary projections of up to 1 foot of total
  rainfall over parts of the area is not out of the question.

* WHERE...All of southeast Missouri, southern Illinois, western
  Kentucky, and southwest Indiana.

* WHEN...From Wednesday afternoon through Sunday morning.

* IMPACTS...Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers,
  creeks, streams, and especially low-lying and flood-prone
  locations. Creeks and streams may rise out of their banks.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...
  - Multiple rounds of locally heavy rainfall over several days
    will result in extreme forecast amounts of up to 1 foot of
    rain that will cause the risk of flash flooding and flooding
    to rise markedly.


PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

You should monitor later forecasts and be alert for possible Flash
Flood and Flood Warnings. Those living in areas prone to flooding
should be prepared to take action should flooding develop.
