Two people were injured in a shooting Friday evening on West 5th Street, according to the Owensboro Police Department. Responding officers also found an abandoned vehicle with bullet holes near the H.L. Neblett Community Center.

According to a release, OPD officers responded to a report of gunfire in the 1000 block of West Fifth Street. While investigating, officers were informed that two individuals had arrived at Owensboro Health Regional Hospital with gunshot wounds, authorities said.

Detectives with OPD’s Criminal Investigations Division were called to assist and reportedly located a vehicle “with visible bullet damage” that was abandoned near the community center. Authorities said officers also found multiple shell casings in the area and are canvassing for additional evidence and witnesses.

As of Friday night at approximately 9:35 p.m., the conditions of the injured individuals were unknown.

Police said the investigation is ongoing. Anyone with any video surveillance or knowledge of the shooting is urged to contact OPD at 270-687-8888 or leave an anonymous tip at Crime Stoppers at 270-687-8484.

(Editor’s note: The original version of this article said the vehicle collided with the community center based on the original information provided by OPD. However, authorities later said the vehicle did not hit the building.)
