List: Tornado shelters available in Daviess, McLean, Hancock counties tonight

With the threat of severe weather and potential tornadoes this evening, several places in Daviess, McLean, and Hancock counties will open their doors as emergency shelters.

Those planning to seek shelter are strongly encouraged to go when a Tornado Watch is issued or sooner, rather than waiting for a Tornado Warning, which is issued when a tornado has been sighted or indicated by radar.

Current shelter locations include:

Daviess County

(per the Emergency Management Agency)

  • Yellow Creek Baptist Church
    5741 KY 144, Owensboro, KY
    Will open if/when the tornado siren sounds
    (If this is your planned shelter, do not wait until the sirens go off to head there)
  • Owensboro Christian Church (Entrance “A”)
    2818 New Hartford Road, Owensboro, KY
    Open from 4 p.m. to midnight or until the threat has passed
  • Stanley Baptist Church
    351 Church Street, Owensboro, KY
    Open from 5 p.m. until the threat has passed
    Enter through the basement door on the left side of the church
  • Metro Pentecostal Church
    6500 US 231, Utica, KY
    Open from 5 p.m. until the threat has passed
    Go through door to the basement on the left side of the church.
  • Heritage Baptist Church
    3585 Thruston Dermont, Owensboro, KY
    Open from 5:30 p.m. until threat has passed
    Park in the front parking lot and enter the main doors.

McLean County

(per the Judge-Executive’s office)

  • McLean County Courthouse
    210 Main Street
    Enter and exit through the front door. Residents are encouraged to bring a folding chair as seating is limited on the first floor.
    Officials ask residents to note that while the courthouse is a strong, safe building, it is not a certified storm shelter.
  • Other shelters per community

    • Sacramento: Methodist Church and Presbyterian Church
    • Island: Baptist Church
    • Livermore: Baptist Church and Methodist Church
    • Beech Grove: Beech Grove Christian Church and Beech Grove Methodist Church (wheel chair ramp may encounter flooding issues based on rainfall, other accommodations are available)

Hancock County

(per the Emergency Management Service)

  • Central Baptist and Dukes Cumberland Presbyterian
