Daviess County residents are being urged to begin flood debris cleanup efforts as soon as possible, with multiple disposal options and safety guidelines now in place following the recent flooding.
The West Daviess County Landfill is accepting flood-related debris from homes at no charge for county residents. Normal hours are Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Knottsville Convenience Center (East Transfer Station), located at 1025 Floral Road near Highway 144, will also accept interior flood debris from homes on Wednesdays and Fridays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to noon.
A temporary debris collection site will be available at Stanley Park (59 Church Street) from April 22 through May 3. The site will operate Tuesday through Saturday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Residents must enter from U.S. 60 West and exit onto Church Street. Upon entering:
- Construction and demolition debris, such as drywall, carpet, lumber, and flood-damaged furniture, should be placed in designated boxes on the right.
- Household debris, including electronics, spoiled food, and household hazardous waste (like paint or pesticides), should be placed in containers on the left. Outdoor and garage hazardous waste should be held until the next Household Hazardous Waste Day.
- A designated collection box for sandbags will be located in the back area.
Officials emphasize that debris should not be left outside of the provided containers.
Appliances that were displaced by flooding may be taken to a landfill or recycling center. In Owensboro, Dahl & Groezinger Recycling accepts most major appliances that do not contain Freon. The Daviess County Landfill will accept emptied refrigerators affected by flooding. For additional recycling information, contact the Kentucky Division of Waste Management at 502-564-6716.
Residents are also urged to use caution during cleanup. Asbestos may be present in materials such as pipe insulation, ceiling tiles, and plaster — especially in homes built between 1950 and 1975.
The Green River District Health Department and Kentucky Department for Public Health recommend Tdap and Hepatitis A vaccinations for those working in or around flooded areas. Vaccination information is available by calling 270-685-5577.
In areas where open burning is not restricted by local ordinance, wooden debris may be burned with an emergency permit. Permits can be obtained by contacting the Division of Waste Management at 502-564-6716 ext. 239.
For assistance with cleanup efforts, residents in Daviess and surrounding counties may call the Owensboro office of the American Red Cross at 270-683-2438.
