The Daviess County Landfill will release its first batch of compost for the spring on Saturday, April 26, according to a release.

The compost will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis for $22 per yard. Regular hours of operation are Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturday from 7 a.m. to noon.

The landfill is located at 7772 KY 815 near the community of West Louisville. Those interested in purchasing compost are encouraged to call 270-229-4484 to confirm availability.

According to the release, the Composting Operation began more than 15 years ago to help divert yard waste from the Contained Landfill. Leaves collected in the City of Owensboro are combined with sludge from the Regional Water Resource Agency (RWRA) and mixed using a SCARAB compost turner.

The sludge contains biosolids with microorganisms that help break down the materials while releasing heat. The compost must “cook” for 30 days at 131 degrees before it is screened and ready for public use.

The resulting Class I compost is ideal for use in lawns and spring flower gardens, the release said.
