Softball Roundup, March 17: THS Vs. MCHS, HCHS, OHS

Starting off the softball season, Trinity (Whitesville) shut out McLean County and Hancock County won at home. In other action, Owensboro dropped a close one to Webster County.

Trinity (Whitesville 12), McLean County 0

The Lady Raiders offense got out to a roll early, scoring three runs in the first inning. They scored two runs in the second, five in the third, and two in the fourth in their 12-0 win over McLean County. Sarah Payne finished 3-4 with two RBIs, while Emersyn Beyke went 2-2 with two walks. The Lady Raiders scored 12 runs on eight hits and drew 10 walks. On the mound, Sophie Hatfield threw four shutout innings, striking out 10 and only allowing one hit.

For the Lady Cougars, Ava McCarty had the team’s lone hit. Sophie Mercer, Brooklyn Whitworth, and Shelby Rickard all drew walks.

“Sophie pitched a great game and the girls did great at the plate,” Trinity (Whitesville) head coach Jessica Morris said. “It was a great way to open our season.”

Hancock County 15, Owensboro Knights Christian 0

Hosting the Owensboro Knights Christian, the Lady Hornets cruised to a 15-0 win on 11 hits. Bella Bryant finished 2-3 with three RBIs, while Ansley House, Audrey Carnes, and Aubree Mosby each had two RBIs.

On the mound, Bryant threw three shutout innings, allowing only two run, while striking out four and walking one. Ryleigh French also pitched, throwing one shutout inning, allowing only one hit and striking out one.

“I am pleased with the way we hit the ball up and down our lineup,” Hancock County head coach Dwayne Wroe. “We were solid defensively with only one error.”

Webster County 8, Owensboro 5

Traveling to Webster County, Owensboro committed to many fielding errors, falling 8-5. Falling behind 4-0 early, the Lady Devils cut the lead to 4-3, before allowing four more runs in the seventh inning.

Alyssa Rhineburger led the way at the plate, going 2-4 with two RBIs, while Hessi Johnson also went 2-4 with one RBI. Ayrish Barksdale had the team’s fifth RBI, while Addison Hick scored two runs.

On the mound, Rhineburger threw a complete game, allowing zero earned runs on nine hits, while striking out four.

“We made too many errors at critical times. We finished the game with six errors, all in the first and seventh inning,” Owensboro head coach Quincy Moorman said. “Alyssa Rhineburger pitched a good game, giving up zero earned runs. We just didn’t help her out defensively.”
