Apollo’s Anslee Roberson has signed with University of the Cumberlands to continue her archery and academic career. The senior is still in season with the Owensboro Archery Club and has been shooting since she was seven.
“Ever since I started, it was a dream of mine to sign with a college,” Roberson said. “I am really excited to go. It is a great program, and they are number one in the nation. This is a great opportunity for me.”
Roberson wanted to stay in Kentucky and be close to her family, but wanted enough of a distance to have independence. She plans to study to become a physical therapist and acknowledged that education played a part in her decision.
“There was a bunch of other schools that offered me that had just as good an archery program, but education is important to me,” Roberson said. “Physical therapy is a competitive field, especially going into nursing schools.”
During the process, she heard received 10-15 offers from schools mostly in Kentucky and Tennessee including Lindsey Wilson, Carson-Newman, and Pikeville.
A member of the Owensboro Archery Club Young Adult team, they won the Triple Crown in 2024 after winning all three Scholastic 3D Archery National Championships in 2024. A nine-time national champion between the three different types of archery she shoots, she won her first title in 2019 at the age of eight.
“That was my favorite Nationals I ever won,” Roberson said. “It was back when our coaches could hold our umbrellas. I remember looking up at my coach after I called to shoot at a bonus ring that’s really hard, and he told me to go for it. So, I called it, shot it, and it won me the National Championship.”
Having just finished up the indoor season, Roberson is preparing for the 3D and then later outdoor seasons. Now knowing where she is going to compete at the college level, she has been relieved of some pressure and is now focused on winning another National Championship with her teammates.
