Local historian and activist Aloma Dew took the stage Wednesday night at WKU-Owensboro to lead a powerful lecture titled “Wonder Women—Yesterday, Today and Beyond: Courage in the Fight for Equality.”

The event, hosted by the Owensboro Area World Affairs Council, was held in recognition of International Women’s Month and focused on the social, economic, cultural, and historical achievements of women.

Dew, a Daviess County native, drew from her decades of experience as an educator, journalist, and environmental organizer to highlight the contributions of women throughout history and the ongoing challenges they face in the fight for equality.

Kevin Dorth, a representative of the Owensboro Area World Affairs Council, said the goal of the event was to foster community engagement and global awareness.

“March is International Women’s Month, so Aloma’s presentation was a timely discussion of issues related to the broader focus of the month,” Dorth said. “We want the community to be informed of how this month is celebrated internationally and the progress still to be made.”

Dew has taught in both Michigan and Kentucky and spent more than a decade organizing for the National Sierra Club. She has also served as chair of various organizations, including the Kentucky Commission on Women and the Owensboro League of Women Voters.

The World Affairs Council offers six free lectures each year, covering a wide range of global issues. Past speakers have addressed topics such as the war in Ukraine, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and opioid trafficking from China to Kentucky.
