Update, 7:30 p.m. — Two accidents caused portions of KY 144 to be shut down Saturday evening but the roadway is now open, according to the Daviess County Sheriff’s Office. The first accident sent five people to the hospital, including a toddler who was airlifted to Louisville.

The first accident occurred at approximately 3:45 p.m. at KY 144 and St. Lawrence Road. An eastbound car on KY 144 encountered a vehicle that was stopped in the eastbound lane waiting to turn left onto St. Lawrence Road, according to DCSO. Witnesses reported that instead of slowing down, the driver went around the stopped vehicle and struck another car head-on that was westbound on KY 144, authorities said.

The driver of the first vehicle was the sole occupant of his vehicle. Four people were in the vehicle that was hit, including a toddler who was airlifted to Norton Children’s Hospital, DCSO said. The driver of the first vehicle and the three other people in the vehicle that was hit were all taken to Owensboro Health by ambulance, according to DCSO.

The second accident occurred at approximately 5:30 p.m. at KY 144 and Aull Road. One vehicle was stopped in traffic on KY 144 eastbound due to the first accident, according to DCSO. Authorities said a second vehicle was coming over the hill on KY 144 traveling eastbound and rear-ended the first vehicle. Both parties were evaluated by AMR on scene but declined medical treatment.

EMS and Daviess County Fire Department crews also responded to the scenes.

The roadway reopened at 6:20 p.m.
