Owensboro’s Chuck Canady has signed with Brescia University to continue his bowling and academic career. A standout in the bowling lanes, Canady spent three seasons with the Red Devils, helping them reach the state and national tournaments in 2023-24.
Growing up his parents competed in a bowling league, leading him to wanting to learn the sport himself.
“I would beg them to bowl, and they would put me into a different lane. I would bowl and that is when it really started. I took a five-seven-year break after that, but got back into bowling when I was 14.”
Planning to study marketing, Canady acknowledged he chose Brescia due to both the bowling and academic programs.
“I have heard a lot of good things about the business side of Brescia,” Canady said. “It is close to home, it is a great program and a great opportunity. So why miss out?”
During the recruitment process, Canady also spoke with Lindsey Wilson, but in the end, Brescia won out. While it was always his goal to bowl in college, he didn’t realize it was a real option until this year. He heard from Brescia in college and after constant communication, he made his decision.
Halfway through this season, he switched from bowling one handed to two handed and after becoming used to it, saw an drastic increase in his scores – leading him to believe he could achieve his dream.
“All of my teammates that were better than me were bowling two-handed and I was surrounded by that,” Canady said. “They kept suggesting I should switch to two-handed and after a while I decided to try it out. After trying it out, I realized I could become really good at it.”
With his future home in place, Canady has felt a huge weight lifted off his shoulders.
“Finally committing feels good and there is a lot less stress,” Canady said. “I got all of the questions and expenses of college out of the way, and I feel amazing and grateful that I can say I was offered to bowl at the collegiate level. I can relax now.”
With only a few months left of his senior year, Canady said he will focus on graduating and then will start preparing for the college season.
“I want to make sure that I have everything set up so that when I bowl in college I am a lot more comfortable.”
