Competing at the King of the Mill individual tournament at Ohio County, Owensboro wrestling finished 9th out of 14 teams, while Owensboro Catholic was 13th. Red Devils sophomore Kameryis Rodriquez Cline finished first at 144, while freshman Adam Quintana Melton was second at 106. Senior Tristan Kirkman finished third at 285 and sophomore Isaac Mattingly was sixth at 190.
“Illness and injuries have really taken a toll on our group this week,” Owensboro head coach Griffen Kelley said. “Despite this, I couldn’t be more pleased with how the guys competed today. Three of our four scorers were underclassmen and we managed to have Kemeryis bring home an individual champion medal. We have a couple of weeks to get healthy as we prepare for regionals.”
For the Aces, Tristen French won at 285 and Sam Brauer (138) and Keegan French (heavyweight) both finished third.
“I am proud of the boys’ efforts as there were several tough teams at the tournament,” Owensboro Catholic coach Matt Allen said. “Tristan has really progressed in his first year of wrestling with only one loss on the season. I am excited to see what he can accomplish in the post season. Sam is only a sophomore, but continues to prove he can hang with anyone he comes up against. Keegan is a first-year wrestler and this was his first-ever tournament. To get third place is a great accomplishment and I think he has a bright future in the sport.”
