Local fire departments and the sheriff’s office have responded to several water emergencies this morning and are urging people to either stay home or use extra caution if travel is necessary until roadways reopen.
According to the Daviess County Fire Department, their crews have worked with the Whitesville Fire Department throughout Sunday morning to make several rescues of both people and animals from homes in East Daviess County that have been affected by flooding.
“All occupants were safely removed from their residences that were affected by the flood water,” authorities said in a Facebook post. “As a reminder, do not drive through roadways affected by floodwater, even if you can still see the roads. … We encourage you, if you can, to stay home and stay safe!”
The Owensboro Fire Department reported that they have had multiple calls of motorists stuck on Carter Road Sunday morning.
“If you are driving and you do not know how deep the water is, then it is too deep,” authorities said in a Facebook post. “Pay attention to signage and avoid areas that have the potential to hold water over the road. Please help us keep yourself and our responders safe by not chancing it by driving through these conditions. Thank you.”
The Daviess County Sheriff’s Office issued a similar message on Facebook, saying “Many roadways are covered with high water. Please do not attempt to drive through even if you can see the roadway. There are many potential dangers that you cannot see. Deputies along with the Daviess County Fire Department and multiple volunteer fire/first responders have responded to and rescued many people in water emergencies and are still doing so at the time of this post. Try alternate routes or stay home if possible. We will update as soon as the roadways open.”
