The Daviess County Coroner has identified the two victims in the fatal vehicle accident that occurred Friday morning on U.S. 60.
According to Coroner Jeff Jones, the victims are 44-year-old Shane Fields and 37-year-old Jordan Dyer, both of Washington, Indiana.
According to the Daviess County Sheriff’s Office, at approximately 7:30 a.m. Friday, Owensboro-Daviess County Central Dispatch received a report of a two-vehicle accident with injuries involving a semi-truck and a pickup truck at the intersection of Hawes Boulevard and U.S. 60 East. Emergency crews were immediately dispatched to the scene and upon arrival it was apparent that the driver of the pickup truck was deceased, DCSO said.
The passenger of the pickup truck was severely injured and trapped in the truck due to severe damage, the release says. According to DCSO, fire and rescue crews were able to free him from the wreckage and he was transported to Owensboro Health Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead. The semi-driver was taken to OHRH for observation.
Preliminary investigation and witness statements indicate that the semi-truck, which was carrying a load of rolled aluminum, crossed U.S. 60 East going north on Hawes Boulevard and was struck by the westbound pickup truck, according to DCSO. The impact caused severe damage to the pickup truck and the trailer of the semi, and the rolled aluminum came loose, the release says.
The collision was investigated by the DCSO Patrol Division’s Accident Reconstruction Unit. Both westbound lanes of U.S. 60 East were closed for approximately 4.5 hours. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet set up a detour that placed westbound U.S. 60 traffic onto Wright’s Landing Road and then onto KY 2830 to bypass the area. The roadway opened at 11:45 a.m.
Several units responded, including Central Dispatch, DCSO, Daviess County Fire Department, Thruston Fire Department, Daviess County Coroner’s Office, AMR Ambulance Service, Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, and OHRH Emergency Department.
