Police say a 14-year-old was injured in an accidental firearm discharge where two juveniles were handling a gun Sunday night on East 19th Street.

According to the Owensboro Police Department, at approximately 6:30 Sunday, patrol officers responded to a report of a male juvenile gunshot victim in the 2100 block of East 19th Street. Upon arrival, officers found a 14-year-old male suffering from a gunshot wound to the leg, according to a release.

OPD said patrol officers immediately applied a tourniquet and provided medical care until the Owensboro Fire Department and AMR arrived to transport the juvenile to Owensboro Health Regional Hospital. The injury appeared to be non-life-threatening, the release says.

A detective with the Criminal Investigations Division responded to assist patrol officers.

“The investigation determined the shooting occurred in a nearby apartment when he and another juvenile were handling the firearm, causing the gun to discharge accidentally,” according to the release.

The investigation is still ongoing.
