The Daviess County Emergency Management Agency will open an emergency shelter for those needing a warm, safe place to stay during the winter storm.

The shelter will be available starting at 5 p.m. Sunday, January 5, at Owensboro Christian Church. Those seeking shelter should use Entrance H near the Rec Center.

Linens and cots will be provided, but guests are encouraged to bring blankets, pillows, snacks and water.

The shelter is open to anyone in Owensboro-Daviess County without power or needing to escape the hazardous weather conditions.

An Ice Storm Warning has been extended until noon Monday, January 6, with significant icing expected through the evening. A release from Fiscal Court said a mix of sleet and freezing rain, along with wind gusts up to 30 mph, could create dangerous conditions.

Officials advise those who must travel to keep an extra flashlight, food and water in their vehicle in case of emergencies.
