Owensboro Police officers shot a man armed with a knife early Saturday morning after responding to a 911 call involving a woman and children.
According to the Owensboro Police Department, officers were dispatched to the 500 block of Orchard Street at 3:22 a.m. following a call in which a dispatcher “heard a female and children in the background crying and asking for officers to hurry.”
According to a release from OPD, officers encountered a man armed with a knife upon arrival. Officials said two officers discharged their weapons, shooting the suspect. Police provided medical care until an ambulance transported the man to Owensboro Health Regional Hospital where he’s being treated for his injuries, according to OPD.
The Owensboro Police Department has contacted the Kentucky State Police to investigate the officer-involved shooting. It is standard procedure for KSP to investigate incidents where an OPD officer discharges a weapon during a call.
KSP has statewide jurisdiction and investigates officer-involved shootings throughout the Commonwealth as requested by local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies. To protect the integrity of an ongoing investigation, it is KSP’s standard operating procedure not to release specific details “until vital witnesses have been interviewed and pertinent facts have been gathered.”
A release from KSP at 10:16 a.m. mirrored much of the statement released by OPD.
A portion of the release reads: “The preliminary investigation indicates multiple OPD officers responded to a 911 call of a disturbance. During the encounter, a male individual at the residence had a knife and was threatening officers and others in the house. Multiple OPD officers fired their agency-issued firearm, striking the individual. The man sustained injuries and life-saving measures were performed on-scene. He was transported to Owensboro Health ICU, where he is in critical but stable condition. No other injuries were reported.”
OPD is investigating the disturbance/domestic violence call, and KSP troopers are investigating the officer-involved shooting. Authorities said both investigations remain ongoing.
