In a big move involving two regional mainstays in the construction materials industry, southern Indiana-based Mulzer Crushed Stone, a CRH company, has acquired the assets of Yager Materials, a company founded in Owensboro in 1914. Company president Ken Mulzer said the purchase expands Mulzer’s footprint into Owensboro while maintaining a focus on local operations and supporting the community.

Mulzer said the acquisition is a strategic fit for the company’s long-term plans.

“Owensboro is a natural addition to our operations, given its logistical advantages on the Ohio River,” Mulzer said. “We’ve long been interested in this market, and this purchase strengthens our ability to serve the region effectively.”

Mulzer Crushed Stone is a division of the Mulzer Family of Companies owned by global building materials leader CRH, while Yager Materials was formerly owned by Carmeuse. The acquisition, finalized in October, involved the purchase of Yager Materials’ property and equipment but not the company itself.

Mulzer emphasized that they immediately began rehiring many of the former employees, although some positions were consolidated due to overlap with existing operations. He expects the local employee count to remain comparable to what it was under Yager.

“We’ve hired back most of the workforce and are still filling several positions,” Mulzer said. “Our goal is to maintain a strong local team while ensuring efficient operations.”

Yager Materials, a long-time provider of aggregates, asphalt, and ready-mix concrete, will now operate under the Mulzer name for its aggregates business. However, Hinkle Contracting, another CRH company based in Lexington, will manage the asphalt and paving operations.

“This setup allows us to bring the best resources and expertise to the Owensboro market,” Mulzer said.

Mulzer also plans to reintroduce services for individual customers, such as small-scale rock and material purchases.

“We value all our customers, from large contractors to homeowners with pickup trucks,” Mulzer said. “We’re excited to bring back that accessibility.”

Mulzer emphasized the company’s commitment to the Owensboro community, noting plans to engage with local organizations and support economic growth.

“Being part of the community is a core value for us,” Mulzer said. “We’re thrilled to join Owensboro’s vibrant growth and look forward to contributing to its future.”

Mulzer also recently entered into a long-term agreement with Castlen Terminals to handle stone and sand at Castlen’s Owensboro facility.

The Mulzer Family of Companies, headquartered in Tell City, Indiana, has operated since the 1930s and became part of CRH in 2017. According to its website, CRH employs 78,500 people across 28 countries and focuses on sustainable, community-driven development.
