Castlen Terminals has entered into a long-term agreement with Mulzer Crushed Stone, a part of the Mulzer Family of Companies, to handle stone and sand at Castlen’s Owensboro facility. President and owner Matt Castlen said the partnership solidifies an existing relationship between the two entities and is expected to bring continued benefits to the community.

“We’re excited to partner with a stable, well-established company to deliver quality products and service,” Castlen said. “This will continue to be a benefit to the community.”

Mulzer Crushed Stone operates under the umbrella of CRH, a global leader in building materials, and began collaborating with Castlen Terminals in 2021. Ken Mulzer, president of Mulzer Crushed Stone, said the company had long been interested in the Owensboro market and saw the partnership as a natural fit.

“We’ve wanted to be part of the Owensboro market for years, and this collaboration allows us to achieve that while making things better for the customer,” Mulzer said. “We’re focused on meeting their needs with multiple convenient locations.”

Under the agreement, Mulzer retains ownership of the stone while Castlen Terminals and its employees will continue unloading barges, scaling, ticketing, and managing logistics. Customers can still pick up stone at Castlen’s terminal, but orders, payments, and deliveries will now go through Mulzer’s sales team. Both Castlen and Mulzer said the setup also allows customers to choose the most convenient Mulzer yard for their needs.

The agreement builds upon a three-year collaboration in which Castlen Terminals handled Mulzer’s stone at its Owensboro location.

“People can still come to pick up stone as they did before,” Castlen explained. “The only difference is that the stone now belongs to them at our yard. We’ll still be the terminal that unloads, scales, and tickets, but the sales go through Mulzer.”

Castlen added that the setup’s flexibility allows customers to confirm availability at the Mulzer yard that’s most convenient for them. He emphasized that this approach eliminates redundancy and ensures the right product is available at the right location.

In October, Mulzer acquired Yager Materials’ property and equipment but not the company itself. They now operate the former Yager location downtown at 701 East 2nd Street and next to Castlen Terminals at 4701 KY 2830 in Owensboro.

Mulzer highlighted that both companies remain committed to serving everyday customers, including homeowners with smaller orders.

“We love that demographic,” he said. “When we look at our top customers year in and year out, our cash and COD customers are always in our top five.”

He said the partnership underscores the companies’ shared commitment to growth and customer service. Mulzer noted Owensboro’s recent economic development and potential for future expansion as key factors in their decision.

“We’ve seen the growth in Owensboro over the last five years, and we want to be part of that,” Mulzer said. “This is an attractive market, and we’re excited to continue growing here.”

The Mulzer Family of Companies was acquired by CRH in 2017, bringing global resources to its operations. CRH employs more than 78,500 people at 3,390 locations in 28 countries, with a mission to build, connect, and improve communities worldwide.
