According to a release, Owensboro Health has temporarily paused scheduling elective procedures at its facilities due to a nationwide shortage of IV solution following disruptions caused by Hurricane Helene.
The release states that the shortage stems from impacts on a major supplier in North Carolina, which provides 60% of the nation’s IV fluids. The precautionary measures affect Owensboro Health Regional Hospital, Owensboro Health Muhlenberg Community Hospital, and Owensboro Health Twin Lakes Medical Center.
Currently, scheduled elective procedures are being evaluated weekly and may be rescheduled. According to officials, emergency and non-elective procedures will not be impacted.
Francis DuFrayne, MD, chief medical officer at Owensboro Health, emphasized the health system’s commitment to ensuring patient care while managing limited resources.
“Owensboro Health is taking strong, proactive steps to manage supplies and provide care to our patients,” DuFrayne said. “Patients can be assured that we have a plan to manage resources and continue to provide high-quality care.”
OH said they are using best practices to conserve supplies and closely monitor the situation, adjusting as necessary.
The FDA is also tracking the shortage, which could persist for several months. Owensboro Health officials said they will reassess their inventory weekly and make changes as needed to maintain care standards.
