The Green River Area Development District (GRADD) AmeriCorps Senior Connections program is accepting applications for new members to serve during its upcoming program year. The program works to reduce the rate of food insecurity for senior citizens and assist them in their ability to live independently in their own homes, establish an effective social support system and a reliable source of nutrition, and ensure they are resilient.
Members will commit to 1,700 hours of community service between September 1, 2024, and August 31, 2025, at non-profit, faith-based, and public agencies that provide services to seniors in GRADD’s seven-county region.
GRADD partners with AmeriCorps to administer the Senior Connections program.
“The AmeriCorps Senior Connections program is life-changing, both for seniors and for our members,” said GRADD AmeriCorps Program Director Brad Alley. “I encourage anyone who has a heart for service and wants to make a meaningful difference in their community to apply.”
According to a release, AmeriCorps, the federal agency for national service and volunteerism, provides opportunities for Americans to serve their country domestically, address the nation’s most pressing challenges, improve lives and communities, and strengthen civic engagement.
Each year, the agency places more than 200,000 AmeriCorps members and AmeriCorps Seniors volunteers in intensive services roles and empowers millions more to serve as long-term, short-term, or one-time volunteers.
AmeriCorps members are eligible for a variety of benefits. Full-time members will receive a living allowance of $18,700 in the upcoming program year. After successful completion of a term of a service, AmeriCorps members will also be eligible for an educational award of $7,395. Members aged 55 and older on their enrollment date can transfer the educational award to a child, grandchild, or stepchild. Members may receive limited health benefits and may qualify for childcare assistance.
To be eligible to serve, an applicant must be a U.S. citizen or legal resident alien 18 years or older. As an Encore program, AmeriCorps Senior Connections especially encourages applicants aged 55 and over to apply and utilize their skills and experience to serve.
