Daviess County is rolling out the welcome mat this weekend as it hosts the 2024 Kentucky State Sporting Clays Championship at the Mattingly Target Shooting Range in Maceo. The event is one of the largest of its kind in Kentucky this year, bringing together 189 shooters from across the state and beyond.

“This is the first time since 2009 that we’ve hosted this championship here,” said Ross Leigh, Recreation Outreach Director for Daviess County Fiscal Court Parks and Recreation. “It’s an honor to have such a prestigious event at the Mattingly Target Shooting Range.”

The championship at the 72-acre facility is divided into two main events. Competitors will start with the Walker 100, a preliminary round, before moving on to the main event. On Saturday, shooters will aim at 100 targets, with another 100 targets on Sunday determining the state’s top marksman.

Leigh emphasized the extensive preparations that went into hosting the championship.

“We had to hold three registered events this year to qualify. Our team has been working tirelessly to get the facility ready and to ensure everything runs smoothly,” he said. “Several volunteers from the county and staff from the parks department are on hand to assist, from scoring to managing logistics.”

The event’s economic impact is expected to be significant. Leigh estimates that the championship will generate around $15,000 internally. Beyond that, he said local hotels, restaurants, and other businesses should see a significant uptick in business because most of the shooters are from out of town.

Daviess County Judge-Executive Charlie Castlen praised the effort to host the championship, highlighting the historical significance and the hard work involved.

“When we took over the range, it was at risk of closing,” Castlen said. “With the support of our staff and community, we’ve turned it around. It’s great to see the state shoot here, and I’ve been told they’re already considering us for next year.”

The Mattingly Target Shooting Range’s success in hosting this event reflects the county’s commitment to maintaining and improving local facilities, making it a prime candidate for future championships.

As the event unfolds, shooters and spectators alike are enjoying Daviess County’s hospitality. Castlen said the shoot showcases the region’s dedication to excellence in sports and community spirit.
