The 2024 boys’ golf high school season is upon us, and each team enters with different goals and expectations.
Apollo: Apollo boys’ golf Head Coach David Lyons enters the season with a young roster in what will be a molding year. Leading the way is returning senior Carter Kimmel, who Lyons is excited to see grow into a leader. While relatively new to the game, Lyons said Kimmel has shown flashes of what is to come.
“Some goals that I have for the team this season are to get the team to learn about all aspects of the game of golf,” Lyons said. “This team is loaded with players that are eager to get better. I want them to learn everything from the fundamentals of playing to course management to the rules. There is a lot to learn, but I want to keep it simple and fun. ”
Daviess County: Entering the 2024 boys’ golf season for Daviess County, all eyes are on Senior Grant Broughton. Broughton has established himself as one of the best players in the region. He is one of the four returners from last year’s roster who will be traveling this year. The Panthers’ roster also includes seniors Lucas Ward, Logan Mewes, and Walker Ferguson.
Head coach Lars King said freshman Collin Reynolds is a player to watch. He complimented his work ethic and his maturity in the game.
“Our goal this year is to make it to the first round of state as a team, which I believe is very possible with our group of players,” King said. Individually, I would like to see Grant make first-team all-state and make a run at the state tournament.”
Owensboro: Owensboro boys’ golf returns four players from last year’s roster—junior Walker Gaddis and Seniors Will Hume, Will Rickard, and Cole Crews. Newcomers junior Jax Malone and senior Nolan Warren, along with 7th grader Colby Vanover, join them.
Head Coach Pat Hume and his team have their eyes set on becoming City-County Champs. They are also striving to win their second regional and semi-state title and to compete for a State Championship.
Owensboro Catholic: The Aces return everyone from last year’s team, including seniors and underclassmen. New head coach Mark Price, a long-time coach at Daviess County, said he likes what he’s seen from his Aces this summer.
Price said Catholic’s goal is to qualify for region and advance past the first round of state, improving drastically over the past couple of years.
The Ace’s top returner is senior Luke Estes. Chasing him is sophomore Luke Estes, followed by three other seniors: Houston Danzer, Hayden Crabtree, and Tanner McFadden. Sophomores Vince Hayden and Hunter Webb and freshmen Tristan Logsdon and Andrew Powell are also vying for a top spot.
“We want to improve on last year’s regional finish,” Price said. “We have the potential to be much better than that. We also want to qualify for All-A state.”
Trinity: Trinity boys’ golf returns Hayden Aull, Connor Hatfield, and Finn Williams. Newcomers include Camden Aud, Issac Hernandez, Will Mills, and Zachary Boarman.
First-year head coach Neal Kirkpatrick wants his young team to fall in love with the game and learn how to compete.
“We want to ensure that golf is not only played the correct way but to compete and enjoy every step of the process,” Kirkpatrick said. “I believe we have a good group of young men interested in the game, and we can only get better. They’re buying into what I have to say, and it’s shown in just a few practices.”
