The Owensboro American Legion Post 9 Bombers paired some heavy hitting with consistent pitching to triumph over Madisonville Post 6 12-2 in their second-round game at the state tournament in Campbellsville. They followed that with a 3-0 win over Lyon County Post 68 to advance to the state title game for the fourth year in a row.

The Bombers’ winning tradition dates back to 1953 when they won their first of 16 state titles. Tomorrow, at 4 p.m. ET, they will attempt to win their fourth in as many years.

In the first game, it was Logen Thomas and Talan Cartwright who came up big at the plate with three hits apiece and a combined five RBIs. Grayson Smith added three RBIs on two hits.

Braxton Franey earned the win, pitching a complete game and allowing just two runs (one earned) on five hits.

The Bombers’ bats were a little slower in the second contest, but it didn’t matter because Lyon County never sniffed a hit against Carter Kimmel. Kimmel pitched a complete game, allowing no runs on no hits with no walks and fanning six batters.

The Bombers scored two of their three runs in the first, followed by another in the fourth for the eventual 3-0 victory.

Eli DeBoer led all hitters with two hits, one of which was a double. Houston Flynn also added a double, while Smith, Thomas, and DeBoer scored the three runs.
