Daviess County’s Grant Broughton rallied late to earn first place at the Hopkinsville Invitational at Hopkinsville Golf and Country Club on Monday afternoon.

The senior fired off a 1-under 70 and finished the round in a three-way tie for first. On the first hole of the playoff, he chipped in from 30 yards to win in exciting fashion.

“It feels really great to get my first win this season,” Broughton said. I’ve been practicing hard, and I feel like I’ve improved from last year. Hopefully, I can keep playing well and win a few more by the time the regional tournament rolls around.”

Head coach Lars King spoke highly of his ace, attributing the win to his resiliency.

“He hung in there today,” King said. “He hasn’t had his best stuff yet this season, but he was still able to get under par. He makes a lot of birdies.”

King hopes that his entire team will follow the same mantra of not allowing one bad shot to ruin a hole or a round.

“We have to keep a positive attitude regardless of how we’re playing,” he said. “It’s easy to get down after a mishit, but it’s crucial to bounce back.”

Walker Ferguson finished 45th for the Panthers, followed by Collin Reynolds in 67th, Bret Poole in 74th, and Lucas Ward in 78th.

With the season just beginning, Broughton said he has no intentions of slowing down anytime soon.

“We just have to keep putting in work and trusting ourselves to play hard and keep our head up when things aren’t going great,” Broughton said. “I trust my teammates and my coach – this is going to be a great year.”
