Update, 11:28 a.m.: The westbound lanes of the U.S. 60 bypass under the Carter Road overpass will be closed for a few hours after a semi-truck hauling a forklift struck the overpass, according to Daviess County Sheriff Brad Youngman. Traffic is being directed to take the off ramp at Carter and then either get back on the bypass or turn north; the overpass itself is closed.
Youngman said a significant amount of concrete debris fell into the roadway but it is all between the off and on ramps for Carter. Traffic coming west from Frederica Street can get off Carter and turn north at the red light or continue straight to get back on the bypass. Traffic cannot turn south because the overpass is closed until it can be inspected.
Eastbound traffic is unaffected other than those getting off the bypass cannot turn north onto Carter.
Youngman said the bridge inspector is en route to make sure the bridge is still structurally sound before reopening the bypass.
Editor’s note: The original version of this story said the Parrish Avenue overpass was struck and a longer stretch of roadway was closed based on information that was provided at that time. However, that information was inaccurate.
This story may be updated if more information becomes available.
